All good things come to an end, and Cairngorm Soapbox Extreme is no exception. We have reached the end of the line and are sorry to have to say that there are no plans to run Cairngorm Soapbox Extreme for the foreseeable future.
We had an amazing 4 years running the longest, fastest and most prestigious soapbox race in the country. We set new standards for soapbox racing and met a great bunch of people - competitors and helpers alike - who gave willingly of their time and talent. But that success also caused its own problems, and with the increasing skill and expertise of the competitors came ever higher speeds, ever closer racing and ever more spectators. Each year saw at least one competitor receiving hospital treatment, and it has become clear that it will take a huge investment of time, money and personnel to provide the necessary measures to address the not inconsiderable risks of racing down a mountain at over 60mph in something that was built in a shed. Sadly, we have neither the resources nor the financial support to effectively manage the risks involved, and we can no longer deliver the event that people have come to expect while providing acceptable levels of safety for the competitors and the spectators. With regret, therefore, we have no option but to cancel CSEx for the foreseeable future.
We wish to express our sincere and heartfelt thanks to everyone and anyone who has been involved in making CSEx the spectacular event that it was. The volunteers, friends and family who travelled hundreds of miles at their own expense to be eaten alive by midges, the racers whose skill and bravery captured the imagination of everyone who saw them, and the groups, organisations and individuals who offered us help and support along the way - without them it simply would not have been possible.
But it's not all over... there are some exciting new projects underway for 2013 and we expect the cartie racing scene will continue to grow and - who knows - maybe even return to Cairngorm one day if we can find sufficient funding to make it happen. In the mean time, there will be plenty of other cartie races in Scotland and across the UK. Keep an eye on www.scottishcarties.org.uk and www.facebook.com/scottishcarties for the latest news.
